The web site was originally created from Little Cayman, and is now maintained from Vancouver, BC. Since I'm more productive during the second half of the day, I've spent many, many nights on the computer for this. With a mandatory stretch every two hours or so, I would just step out on my porch and stare at the Caribbean sky, or listen to the ocean. I like all kinds of mellow music but in order to stay awake, I'd blast the Sisters of Mercy and Rammstein, God bless my - distant - neighbors!
The site is best viewed with a great deal of tolerance, a few cups of coffee, a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768, and it was optimized for Mozilla-based browsers . Having myself switched from IE to Firefox (I do all my primary testing on Firefox 1.5) I am happy to report that the only feature I haven't been able to adapt is Internet Explorer's self-destruct feature ;-) I have also stopped worrying too much about graceful degradation in much older browser versions since there is such a variety of great free browsers available (see below).
Make sure you give the mighty Windows XP permission to run Evil Active Content or the menus won't display properly! (The active content being executed here is simply the javascript menus, not a world-wide SkyNet takeover. ;-) Allowing cookies for the site would also help the photo galleries function at 100%.
I decided to use many features of Javascript, DHTML and CSS since they seem to have become a standard on the web. I also have done my best to comply with the new XHTML 1.0 standard; XHTML will be the newest version of HTML combined with XML, replacing HTML 4 with similar but cleaner and stricter code. It will be readable by different media (PDA's, cell phones, TV, etc.) and will allow better cross-browser support, while not being limited in growth.
The main gallery script was inspired by many sources and adapted to fit my needs. Coriolistic Anachronisms, the web site's blog, is powered by Serendipity; more info can be found on this blog post.
Some of the cascading popup menus and morphing slideshow provided by TwinHelix Designs. Great scripts!
My apologies to those of you who's browser does not support these features, but the web is a dynamic, rapidly evolving medium, and one gets left behind easily. You might want to upgrade your browser version, you'll be amazed at the results! It's possible to get most new browsers as a free download from their respective company's web page. These include Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla and the great newcomer Firefox (Netscape-like), Opera (not free), Avant and others.
All the links to my email address have been encrypted as a protection measure against spam. This doesn't affect you the human visitor, it only makes it impossible for the spammers' robots to harvest the link while crawling the pages. All you have to do to send me an email is click on one of the links as you normally would; you'll even notice that your status bar displays the normal "Sends mail to..." or "mailto" message while the mouse hovers over the link. Yet the spiders are fooled. Spam is a calamity, it must be dealt with! If you'd like to do your part and fight spam, click here!
Comments and feedback about the site are most certainly welcome. Feel free to
Contact Me with comments, suggestions or bug reports, or sign the guestbook.
Thanks for your interest, your tolerance, your sense of humor, and all the fish ;-) And enjoy your visit!
